THE GUIRO

READ TO ME   The Guiro is an instrument used all over South America, Central America, and the surrounding islands.  This first video is a good example of how to play the guiro.

 

 

 

 

READ TO ME   Traditionally, guiros were made from dried gourds and fruits.  Sometimes they would be made from bones or wood.  Not all guiros are handmade traditionally anymore.  You can find metal and plastic guiros at music stores.  These are more durable and can play louder, sharper sounds that work better for modern bands.  Try the listening activity below. Can you hear the scraping sound of the guiro?

                             

 

Listening Activity

Listen to the guiro playing the song, "Christmas Dance".   

Now,  listen to "Christmas Dance" with the other instruments and the singer.

Did you hear the guiro?   Listen to the song without the guiro.

Do you hear the difference?   Try it altogether one more time.
